An Air Arabia flight coming from the Jordanian capital of Amman to Sharjah had to be diverted to Ras Al Khaimah today (June 8) due to oil leakage on the runway from another cargo aircraft.

The Sharjah-based low-cost carrier said in a statement to Emirates 24l7 that the flight G9330 received instruction from Sharjah Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower just before landing about the diversion.

"Air Arabia flight G9330 from Amman to Sharjah on June 8, 2015 was diverted to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in UAE shortly before landing following instructions from the Air Traffic Control due to runway safety inspection at Sharjah Airport,” the airline’s spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson said the flight was diverted due to oil leakage on the runway from another cargo aircraft.

The flight passengers had to wait for more than an hour at  Ras Al Khaimah International Airport before the flight returned to Sharjah. There were 100 passengers on board the diverted flight.

“The diverted flight landed in Sharjah soon after the runway was open for landing with total delay time of 1hr 30 minutes. We regret any inconvenience caused. The safety of our passengers and crew remains Air Arabia’s highest priority," the statement said.

No other Air Arabia flights were diverted or affected by the oil leakage on the runway.

A response from Sharjah Airport was awaited at the time of  filing this report.
