Air India, Jet on best first-class airline list

Flagging carrier Air India has finally something to smile about, as the state-run airline made the cut in the top 10 list by ‘The Richest’ website counting down airlines boasting first class luxury.

While Air India nabbed the number nine position on the list, which sees Asian giant Cathay Pacific and Emirates at the number one and two spots, respectively, Indian carrier Jet Airways also made it to the countdown at number eight.

For Air India, the accolade comes with an ironic twist, what with media reports last month speculating plans on the airline shutting down its first class segment on several routes as a cost-cutting exercise after a loss of Rs3,900 crore.

Air India’s first class cabin or the ‘sleeperette’ as they call it, is described as the ultimate in luxury, with its website stating: “As you sit back and relax aboard Air India’s First Class, you could well be forgiven for thinking you are the only passenger on board.

“The First Class cabin seats just 12 passengers... But there is a lot more to Air India’s First Class experience before we say adieu.

“After a couple of stimulating cocktails, the faint clink of Royal Doulton, the world’s finest bone china, will waft down the aisle.”

Meanwhile, competitor Jet Airways is described as: “Amazing comfort, efficient service and delicious meals are the three ingredients that make up the Jet Airways Première experience.”

Similar to newer carriers, passengers can sink into luxury as they recline in their private cabins with a personalised wardrobe and extensive entertainment options; five-course meals are served, along with some of the world’s finest grapes.
