Airstrikes kills 23 militants: Pak army

Afghan residents sit in front of their house in Kandahar on December 25, 2014. Afghanistan's economy has improved significantly since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001 largely because of the infusion of international assistance. Despite significant improvement in the last decade the country is still extremely poor and remains highly dependent on foreign aid. (AFP)

Pakistan's army says its warplanes have killed 23 militants as part of an ongoing operation in a troubled tribal region near the Afghan border.

An army statement says the airstrikes were carried out Friday evening in the Datta Khel area of the North Waziristan tribal region.

The attacks also destroyed an underground tunnel system and a large underground cache of weapons and ammunition, the statement said.

The army says it has killed over 1,200 militants since the start of a massive offensive launched June 15 against militants in North Waziristan.

Journalists are barred from the region and it is impossible to independently verify the information.

The operation is aimed at eliminating those Pakistani and foreign militants accused of launching attacks in Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan.
