All traffic lights in the emirate of Dubai will be replaced, announced the Road and Transport Authority (RTA).

A state-of-the-art LED lighting system will become operative in all traffic lights, not only saving money and energy consumption but also changing the way the light will look when directing traffic or pedestrians on the road.

“The features of the system enable better control of the light when compared to conventional bulbs; which would reduce the light wastage. Additionally, it enables symmetrical light distribution at the target spots, and the technology has auto-dimming feature according to the degree of external lighting.

“These lights can be clearly visible during daytime without being impacted by sunray reflections on the lenses,” said Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA.

The system provides lighting for longer periods with less maintenance requirements, and minimise power consumption to the bare minimum,” she continued.

“The amount of expected savings as a result of installing these new units is estimated in the order of Dh900 thousand per annum i.e. optimizing consumption by as much as 55%, besides contributing to conserving the environment through reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

The project will be carried out in phases and the RTA has already begun with phase one.

“Replacing the traffic lights is part of a plan set by the RTA for the second half of this year to upgrade traffic systems; which would accordingly improve the traffic safety on the heavily congested roads and streets in the Emirate of Dubai, and develop solutions for main intersections that witness recurrent traffic accidents,” added Maitha.
