At least 19 killed as bus plunges into Peru ravine

An intercity bus plunged into a ravine outside the Peruvian capital Lima on Monday, killing at least 19 people and injuring another 15, police said.

"There are at least 19 dead. 17 of whom are still at the scene in the town of Calango," in the Lima region, police colonel Leonidas Arrivasplata said.

The injured have been brought to local hospitals, he added.

The cause of the deadly crash was under investigation.

But highway fatalities are staggering and constant in the Andes, where crowded buses travel along narrow, twisting and ill-paved roads, and most people cannot afford domestic air travel.
