A woman in Saudi Arabia prematurely gave birth to a baby girl after 24-week pregnancy and doctors said they managed to save the baby’s life although she weighed less than half kg at birth, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The baby was born at a government hospital in the southwestern province of Najran near the border with Yemen and she had been kept at the intensive care unit for 101 days before doctors decided she was out of danger.

Quoted by Alwatan newspaper, doctors said the baby was in a critical condition given the premature delivery, her small weight and heart problems. They said the death rate in such cases is very high globally.

“She had been kept at hospital for 101 days before doctors decided she was out of danger and discharged her this week,” the paper said, quoting Saleh Al Dhaiba, a spokesman for the health department in Najran.

“She weighed only around 440 gm at birth…when she was discharged, she was 1.8 kg…she is now in a good condition and is being followed up by our doctors through the outpatient clinics.”
