Big drop in phone scam cases: Dubai Police

Increase in public awareness resulted in a massive drop in the number of telephone scam cases victims, a top official said.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director General of Dubai Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said that the number of telephone scam cases registered in the emriate has dropped noticeably.

“We have also succeeded in arresting many suspects involved in such cases and returning the stolen money to the victims,” he said without disclosing the total amount of money they returned to the victims.

Brigadier Al Mansouri added that this drop is the direct result of their efforts to curb such crimes.

“We at Dubai Police have come up with many campaigns to track the culprits and cut down on such crime cases. We succeeded in arresting many gangs who were operating such scams,” he said.

According to him, the increase in public awareness plays a key role in the drop in such crime cases.

“We have conducted many awareness campaigns in the media and fought this crime which was dragging not only the illeterate victims, but also highly educated individuals.

Another official form Sharjah Police shared similar views and said that the number of telephone scam victims has also dropped noticeably in Sharjah.

“Nowadays, we receive calls from the public who inform us that they received calls which tells them that they won different prizes, and they give us the callers telephone numbers. This is a good and healthy thing as it shows the increase in the level of public awareness.”

He pointed out they pass these number to the Sharjah Police Criminal Investigation Department who takes further steps and start investigations.
