Brace up for sandstorms in UAE over weekend

The weatherman is predicting partly cloudy weather for UAE over this weekend, with chances of light rains and lightning in some areas. “Partly cloudy weather over some areas, with a chance of some rainy towering clouds at times over some northern, eastern and internal areas with lightning at times,” says the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) forecast for Thursday.

“Light to moderate winds in general, freshening at times causing blowing dust / sand over some internal areas” is also in store and the “sea [will be] rough at times,” the NCMS reckons.

For Friday, the forecast is for another bout of dust/sandstorm. “Partly cloudy weather over some areas, with a chance of some towering clouds over the eastern areas. Light to moderate winds in general, freshening at times causing blowing dust / sand over some internal areas. Sea will be slight to moderate, with 2 - 4 ft offshore,” says the NCMS forecast for tomorrow.

A sandstorm hit Dubai yesterday from the inland desert, with visibility in many areas along Al Ain Road very poor with strong winds and blowing sand obscuring the road at times.

“Warning: kindly take care while driving because the weather is not stable and the dust is covering the area in Bur Dubai, Al Barsha and Jabel Ali,” the Dubai Police (@DubaiPoliceHQ) tweeted yesterday to warn drivers.

The sandstorm near Ras Al Khor and other parts of Dubai caused traffic to slow down.

In recent days, the UAE has been witnessing unusual weather with rains and thunderstorms in the northern emirates and high winds and poor visibility elsewhere.
