Bullfighting in UAE: A Fujairah tradition

Published

A traditional bullfighting event in Fujairah was captured on smart phone camera last month. The result: a smart phone-only gallery showcasing the best at Gulf Photo Plus in Al Quoz this week.

The HTC Photowalk, as the initiave was called, was organised by HTC. A total of 36 competitors were sent out with different HTC smart phones to the pit of the bullfight, with the incentive to win the ‘Best HTC smartphone picture’ taken.

This honour went to Rajesh Laganathan and Aamir JahanZeb, who both captured bulls in the heat of a fight; one showing a fight with a competing bull, while the other displayed the struggle of its owner trying to get the bull out of the ring.

The bullfighting contest is an age-old tradition held in Furjeirah every Friday from 5 PM. The bull that butts the other bull the longest in a one-minute challenge wins the game. The honour of such victory is for the owner, who clearly takes pride in walking  off with the winning bull.

The event is well visited by spectators from all over the country, although the vast crowd is from the emirate itself.

The competitors behind the smart phones have clearly managed to capture not only the heat of the game, but the context too. The 35 pictures on display at the exhibition are of the Braham bulls as well as the spectators; the routinely carried out activities at the event as well as the spontaneous interaction between fighters and owners.

Today is the last day of the exhibition, which is open to the public from 10-6. The entry fee is Dh50.
