A branch of popular eatery Chili's was shut down on Wednesday by the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) as a punitive measure for violating hygiene standards.

The closure of Chilis Hamdan Street branch is part of the strict enforcement of food safety measures through a campaign launched recently by ADFCA, Gulf News reported.

The action comes close on the heels of a similar shutting down of Ibrahimi Restaurant’s Mena Zayed branch.

As part of the campaign the ADFCA inspectors visit restaurants and food outlets unannounced and violators of food safety norms are penalised depending on the nature of their violations

According to a statement by ADFCA, the hygiene conditions in the restaurant were so bad that the inspectors decided to immediately order its closure in the interest of public health and safety.

The inspectors found the restaurant was violating several rules and regulations governing food safety in the emirate, said the statement.

Mohammad Jalal Al Reyaysa, Director of Communication and Community Service at ADFCA, said that the restaurant will remain closed until rectifying the causes of the closure. "The restaurant was violating several rules and regulations concerning food safety," he pointed out.

When contacted, the manager of the outlet confirmed the closure. He said he will give a detailed comment on the charges made by the authority soon.
