Consular access granted to Sarabjit Singh

Pakistan has stated it will grant consular access to Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who remains in critical condition after being attacked on Friday in a Lahore jail.

Four members of his family have visited the comatose Singh in hospital, who was serving time on death row in Pakistan.

The family wants to move Singh to India for better medical care, whilst doctors treating the 49-year-old have been quoted as saying that he is showing “no sign” of improvement and chances of survival are “slim”.

Singh has been placed on ventilator support.

According to his family members, Singh had warned them of a possible attack on his life, as per media reports; however, no one paid heed to his pleas.

Singh was reportedly attacked by a blade and bricks, with investigations continuing into his brutal attack.

Originally from Punjab, Singh has been serving a sentence in Pakistan for the past 23 years after being accused of being responsible in a bomb blast that killed 14 people.

Meanwhile, the accused’s family has maintained that Singh stumbled across the border in an inebriated state and is innocent.

The high profile case has drawn support from international quarters, with even celebrities such as Salman Khan and director Mahesh Bhatt joining in an online campaign to free Singh.

Bhatt also took to Twitter earlier on Monday to say: “Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir is heading towards Nankana Sahib to pray for her brothers life. Sarabjit needs to be brought to India for treatment.”
