Survivors walk under a fallen electric post after super Typhoon Haiyan battered Tacloban city, central Philippines November 10, 2013. One of the most powerful storms ever recorded killed at least 10,000 people in the central Philippines, a senior police official said on Sunday, with huge waves sweeping away entire coastal villages and devastating the region's main city. Super typhoon Haiyan destroyed about 70 to 80 percent of the area in its path as it tore through Leyte province on Friday, said police chief superintendent Elmer Soria. As rescue workers struggled to reach ravaged villages along the coast, where the death toll is as yet unknown, survivors foraged for food as supplies dwindled or searched for lost loved ones. One of the most powerful storms ever recorded has killed at least 10,000 people in the central Philippines, with huge waves sweeping away entire coastal villages and devastating the region's main city.

In response to the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) the Philippine Consulate in Dubai has begun relief efforts, mobilising aid and plans to raise funds to help those affected.

A special fund raiser will be held on Friday on the consulate premises in Dubai.

Frank Cimafranca, Consul General in Dubai told Emirates 24|7 that the magnitude of the disaster is so immense that many Filipinos in the UAE will have experienced some impact, in a worst case scenario with relatives and friends missing.

At least 10,000 people are believed to be dead in Leyte alone.

“We are ready to provide all assistance to those here in the UAE looking for help,” said Cimafranca.

Mataliyn Baguno, president of FilCom, a community organizstion based in Dubai and the Northern Emirates says the all those interested to contribute are welcome to attend the Friday event.
“We have priced the entry at Dh50 each,” she said.

Google’s person finder

Google has launched a person finder in the aftermath of the disaster to help find those missing.

The app is similar to what it launched during the Boston Marathon Bombing and the recent Cylone Phalin in India.

The service enables a person to either search for someone missing or to share the information about someone whom they find.
