An Arab fraudster used a unique way to cheat his victims and take over their cars. He targeted those who place advertisements in the local newspapers wanting to sell their four-wheel cars. He gave them cheques of a company which was closed down ten years ago, said a top official from Dubai Police.

Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director General of the General Department for Criminal Investigations (CID) told Emirates 24|7 that the Egyptian suspect was arrested red-handed while he was giving the cheque to a secret police agent.

“He cheated at least five victims in Dubai by buying their cars and giving them cheques instead of cash. He targeted owners of four-wheel cars by taking their details from classified of local newspapers. He contacted them and agreed to buy their cars for cash. On the day of sale, he would show up with a cheque of a company and lure them to accept the cheque instead of the cash by offering them between Dh25,000 to Dh30,000 more than the actual offered price for sale.”

Brigadier Al Mansouri added: “He would show up late on purpose and give them the cheque after 1.30pm when the cashiers of the bank close. The victims would find out that they were cheated the next day when they would go to en cash the cheque from the bank.”

He added that they received three complaints regarding the same company, thus, they set up a trap to arrest him.

“We set up many traps, and finally, he called one of our agents wanting to buy a four-wheel car from us. We arrested him red-handed when he offered a cheque from the same company.”

Brigadier Al Mansouri pointed out after arresting him, they found out that he was wanted for five other cases in the other emirates.

“He sold these cars to others who then smuggled them to the neighbouring countries. We contacted the authorities in these countries to return these cars to their owners,” he said.

Brigadier Al Mansouri urged those who were duped by this suspect to identify him and report their cases to police by calling 999 in order to claim their cars.
