Abu Dhabi police advised expatriates going home by land for their annual vacations to stick to speed limits on motorways after the deployment of more police cameras, warning offenders face jail and confiscation of their vehicles.

Police said motorways and other roads leading to neighbouring Saudi Arabia have speed cameras following deadly accidents in the area.

“We appeal to all drivers leaving the UAE through Saudi Arabia to respect speed limits on motorways and avoid overtaking other vehicles” said Colonel Jamal Al Amiri, director of public relations in Abu Dhabi’s police.

“Many speed cameras have been installed on those roads. Drivers must be careful and violators will be arrested, have their vehicles seized and pay fines for speeding,” he told the semi-official Arabic language daily ‘Al Ittihad’.

He also advised drivers with tainted car glass to ensure they stick to the “taint rate” of a maximum 30 per cent enforced by the UAE and all other GCC countries.

He said motorists should also check their car tyres before travelling, on the grounds that high temperatures would lead to tyre bursts and consequently serious accidents.

“Drivers are also advised to take rest every four hours.

“This is good for their body and for their car engines, which could be damaged in temperatures reaching 50 degrees.”
