Dubai court jails two for 7 months for assault
The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced two Emiratis to seven months in jail on charges of assaulting a man and consuming alcohol.
HMD, 20, civil defence policeman and SHM, 23, jobless were accused of assaulting a man and causing him 12 per cent rate of permanent disability. The two accused were caught by the radar while they attempted to escape.
RKS, 26, Emirati, testified that on October 7, 2010, at around 1.30am he left his house at Police complex at Al Safa area. “As I reached the public road I stopped aside to make a call. I saw two Nissan cars stopped behind me and about 8 to 10 people get down and rushed towards me. I tried to run away from there but fell on the ground. They attacked me with sticks and swords and fled the scene.”
Corporal Abdullah Mohammed, 20, testified that at around 2 am he saw about 10 people hitting a man in the street and as he drove towards them, they drove away with their cars and the number plates were covered with aluminum sheet.
He followed them from a distance and drove towards Al Wasl road where a radar caught them. Then they drove into a branch road where they removed the aluminum sheets from the number plate and continued driving.
As corporal Abdullah Mohammed was following them from a distance he could not note down the numbers. He soon lost track of them as the group then broke the traffic signal and jumped yellow traffic light.
After the incident was reported police traced the car and its owner after retrieving pictures from Al Wasl street radar. They also found the aluminum sheets they had used to cover their number plates.
HMD was arrested and he confessed that he used his car to pick some people who assaulted a man. He denied participating in the assault.
SHM was also arrested but even he denied participating in the assault.
