The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC) and Dubai Police have launched a five-year plan to protect women and children and promote efforts to combat trafficking in persons.

Head of the Dubai Police Human Trafficking Crimes Monitoring Centre, Lt Col Dr Sultan Al Jamal, said the plan is aimed at supporting and raising awareness of four groups involved in this crime: victims, witnesses, staff of authorities combating trafficking in persons as well as the whole society.

The plan also seeks to make the victims "ambassadors of the cause" in their home countries, he said, adding that a number of innovative programmes will be used for the first time in the plan which also seeks to expand its reach overseas.

Sultan said trafficking in persons is a cross-border and transnational  crime that is carried out in a country of origin, a country of transit and a country of destination.

The launch of the initiative named ‘Protecting You Makes Us Happy’ coincides with the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, celebrated on July 30 every year to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.

Director of Dubai Police's Human Rights Department, Brigadier Mohammed Al Murr, said the UAE is a leader in combating human trafficking and has launched several campaigns and initiatives and enacted tough legislations against the crime.

He stressed that combating trafficking in persons is a top national priority for the wise leaders of the UAE.

Al Mur further noted that the initiative is in line with the core approaches pursued by the UAE's National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT), a federal body formed in 2007.

The federal four-pronged anti-trafficking plan was designed to prevent the crime, enforce the law and provide necessary support to victims.

Director-General of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children and member of the Federal National Council, Afra Al Basti, said that the support extended by the wise leaders was instrumental in consolidating the UAE's stature as an oasis for safety and security.
