Serena Williams took the first steps towards claiming a title she has never yet managed to win during her illustrious career when she defeated Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (8) 6-0 in the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Tuesday night.
On the previous evening, two-time former champion Venus Williams made a winning start to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, while Ivanovic saved match point to earn the right to face Venus Williams.
In its 22nd year, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is one of the most popular and competitive events on the world circuit.
The tournament will run from the February 17 to March 1, with non-stop action commencing with the $2 million WTA Premier Event, followed on February 24 by the 22nd staging of the $2 million ATP 500 tournament.
The world-class players who will provide the strongest possible opposition include World number one Serena Williams, her sister Venus Williams, WTA Most Improved Player of the Year Simona Halep, recent Paris Indoor champion and 2013 Dubai runner-up Sara Errani, Ana Ivanovic who last month won Auckland and then upset Serena at the Australian Open, 2014 Sydney finalist Angelique Kerber and Brisbane semi-finalist and former world number one Jelena Jankovic.
Play in the WTA event begins on February 17 and continues until February 22, followed by the ATP tournament which takes place from February 24 to March 1, and features defending champion Novak Djokovic, five-time champion Roger Federer, Australian Open semi-finalist Tomas Berdych and world number four Juan Martin Del Potro.
