A total of 1,256 wanted vehicles were spotted and stopped by Dubai Police this year with the latest upgrade of the camera bar.

Fitted on top if a police car, this system includes 10 cameras which can detect vehicles from every angle.

Further, it includes an automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). When a wanted vehicle appears a signal is sent to a smart system inside the car and the police officer will immediately be notified.

The system was implemented this year to detect the high number of wanted vehicles in the emirate.

So far, 1256 wanted vehicles have been detected with the technology, of which 10 are currently on the road, said an officer at the ongoing Gitex Technology Week.

The rooftop device is just one part of what is presented as the Dubai Police smart car.

A mobile radar is another element. "The mobile radar allows the police officer to drive around while operating a speed radar."

This is different from the radar used next to the side of the road, as this is a standalone piece of equipment, explained the officer.

A device is placed next to the number plate on the front of the police car, from where it can detect speeding vehicles in front and to its right.

"Speeding vehicles can be detected within a 50 meter radius."

The mobile radar is currently on display and not fitted in vehicles yet, but will eventually be part of every police car.
