Abu Dhabi's traffic court has convicted nearly 1500 motorists caught driving over 200 kmph on the emirate's roads this year and is considering introducing tougher penalties.

The offenders have had their cars seized for one month and ordered to pay heavy fines for driving in a reckless way that posed a threat to human life and property.

The court said in a report that the speedsters have been caught by police patrols on internal and external roads as well as by police cameras.

"The traffic prosecution in Abu Dhabi's Justice Department is now working on modifications to the traffic law in collaboration with the competent authorities. These modifications are intended to toughen penalties and increase black points in some offences," it said.
