1,679 die on Abu Dhabi roads in 5 years

Drivers in Abu Dhabi caused more than 12,000 accidents that killed 1,679 people in five years, almost an average one death every day.

Police statistics showed 2,071 people were killed on roads in 2013 and 2,056 in 2012 while 2009 recorded the highest casualties of 3,086 during the five-year period.

A police report said most of the accidents were caused by speeding, reckless driving, jumping the red lights, sudden change of lane and failure to pay attention to road users.

The report showed Abu Dhabi emirate, with a population of around two million, had  nearly 909,000 vehicles and 1.19 million drivers at the end of June 2014.
