Dubai police seized more than 10,800 cars in just four months, an average 90 vehicles a day, because of reckless driving and accumulating road offences.

About 2,800 cars were impounded in March, the highest number of seized vehicles in the emirate during that period, according to police.

The figure in the first four months of 2016 is slightly below that in the same period of last year, when about 11,355 cars were impounded by the police.

“The cars were impounded in the first four months of this year for various reasons, including reckless driving, illegal car racing, expiry of driving licence and accumulating traffic offences,” Dubai’s traffic police chief Colonel Saif Al Mazroui said.

Quoted by the Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm', he said 31 serious traffic offences entail the impounding of vehicles in the UAE, including those offences as well as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, overtaking by trucks and driving without plates.

He added that in some cases, vehicles are impounded for two months and their drivers are fined Dh100,000.
