10 extra school days: UAE parents pleased

The UAE Ministry of Education’s decision to extend the 2014-15 school calendar by 10 days has been applauded by parents in the country.

“This just means better value for the fees we pay,” reasoned a parent, who observed how there were too many unplanned holidays during the current academic year. “Kids miss out on important classes and precious time with their teachers. This is great news.”

Another parent added that the announcement of the school calendar helps in planning family holidays better. “We have ample time to plan holidays and save on early bookings.”

The next school session will start on August 31, 2014, and end on June 25, 2015. All school administrators and teachers will begin work from August 24, 2014 until July 9, 2015.

The decision to add 10 extra days to the next academic year is in line with international standards. This has been achieved by deducting 10 days from the first semester break in December.

The first school break will be from December 21, 2014 until January 1, 2015. The second break will be from March 29, 2015 to April 9, 2015.

The exam schedules for public schools and private schools that follow the MoE curriculum will also be directed by the decision. However, private schools with foreign curricula can set their own exam schedules.

All public and private schools, barring Indian and Pakistani schools, in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Northern Emirates will follow this new calendar.

The calendar will also extend to adult education centres and polytechnic schools.

The total number of school days will be 74 in the first term, 60 in the second and 55 in the final term, totally the school days to 189.

The dates have been endorsed by Abu Dhabi Education Council and Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai.
