11,303 infected with contagious diseases

Hospitals and clinics in Dubai registered 11,303 cases of people infected with contagious diseases last year, according to a report released by Dubai Health Authority.

The report said that the authority has been monitoring closely 35 infectious diseases including AIDS, cholera, typhoid and malaria among others, while diseases like leprosy, meningitis, herpes chicken pox, German measles and scabies were also under scanner.

Among the infected 1621 were Emiratis while the rest of the 11,303 were expats at the combined rate of 5.9 per 1000 population.

According to the report, 173 people were infected by typhoid, 2068 patients by syphilis and 323 were infected by malaria. 

The report also disclosed that hospitals and clinics of Dubai received

64 cases of swine flu (HP 1 1), 13 of them were citizens, and 3219 persons were infected by chickenpox, among them 768 emaratis, and 270 persons infected by, herpes disease, including 39 citizens.
