Labour Ministry inspectors have caught 11 companies violating a summer noon work ban in outdoor sites during random visits over few weeks to ensure compliance with the three-month ban, according to a senior Ministry official.

Maher Al Awbad, assistant undersecretary for labour inspection, said inspectors had visited 10,430 open work sites during June 15-30 to check adherence with the decision to ban work between 12:30 and 3:30 pm from June 15 to Sept 15.

“We found that the compliance rate is very high at 99.8 per cent…11 companies were found to be violating the ban,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

He said offenders would be fined Dh5,000 per each labourer made to work during that period, with the maximum penalty reaching Dh50,000.

He said inspectors would continue to go to open work sites through the summer period to prevent further violations of the workers’ rights.

The UAE, one of the largest bases for Asian workers in the Middle East, began enforcing the summer noon work ban 11 years ago as part of its policy to protect workers’ rights and prevent accidents at construction and other open sites.
