Dubai’s education authorities gave the green light for 119 schools to slightly raise their tuition fees for the next 2014-2015 academic year after they met conditions for such an increase, an education official was reported on Thursday as saying.

They were among 135 private schools that applied for a fee hike in May to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), said Mohammed Darweesh, director of the systems and permits at KHDA.

He told the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm that schools rated as “excellent” were allowed to raise their fees by 3.48 per cent while 2.61 per cent was approved for “good” schools and 1.74 per cent for “acceptable and weak” schools.

“We approved the increase in fees by those schools after we found they met the required conditions…the increase is compatible with the school fee system and the education cost index in the emirate,” he said.
