At least 122 people have been detained in Sharjah for violating the residency laws.

Most of those arrested by the Interior Ministry are Asians and Africans. They include 12 women, too, said Colonel Ali Ibrahim Al Tunaiji, Head, Illegals and Foreigners Follow-Up Section of Sharjah.

The arrests were made in campaign raids conducted by the Follow-Up Section in co-ordination with police in areas such Al Taawun, Al Nasiriyah, Al Sabkha, and the Industrial Area No. 5.

Col Tunaiji said the campaign is in line with the plan by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Sharjah and its sections to curb illegal residency in the emirate.

He called on companies to respect labour laws and refrain from hiring illegal staff. He remined the institutions that a fine of Dh50,000 will be imposed on anyone who hires an illegal employee and a Dh100,000 fine in addition to jail term for those caught repeating the act.

He urged residents to inform authorities on the toll free no 80080 if they spot any suspicious people or activities they think would pose a threat to the safety and security of the community.
