14% drop in run-over deaths in Abu Dhabi

Pedestrian fatality accidents in Abu Dhabi dropped significantly during 2012 by 14 per cent, following traffic police campaigns to ensure road safety and the cooperation shown by motorists and pedestrians alike.

Colonel Hamad Mubarak Al Ameri, Director of Abu Dhabi Traffic Police said 2012 saw 3,588 tickets issued for jay-walking and 983 tickets for motorists who parked their vehicles in pedestrian crossings.

He added that the under a collaboration with the strategic partners; Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality, Western Region Municipality and the Department of Transport, a master plan for pedestrian crossings is being developed.

The plan entails construction of additional pedestrian suspension bridges, 20 in Abu Dhabi, 2 in Al Ain and 4 in the Western Region, in addition to fences in main roads.

"Pedestrian bridges and fences have led to a notable 14 percent drop in run-over fatalities last year, compared to 2011," said Al Ameri.
