Parents in Abu Dhabi scrambling for school seats for their children have reason to cheer.
Fourteen new schools have opened in Abu Dhabi this academic year.
The new schools will offer an additional 18,000 school seats, according to the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec).
Of the 14 new schools, five will offer British curriculum, four Indian, two will follow American, while one each for Canadian, Philippines and Ministry of Education.
Eleven of the schools will be located in Abu Dhabi’s mainland, two in Abu Dhabi Island and one in Al Ain.
Hamad Al Dhaheri, Private Schools and Quality Assurance Sector (PSQA)’s executive director explains that the introduction of new schools is in line with Adec’s on-going efforts to encourage private school investments.
“There is a strategy plan to offer additional school seats in order to keep up with the growing student population rate.
“We are in the process of introducing 18 new private schools, some of which are currently being designed or under construction.
“These schools will help accommodate 20,000 students.”
He added that the “student population has grown 7% yearly”.

Coming soon: List of Abu Dhabi schools allowed fee hike
A day after local media reported that the Abu Dhabi schools allowed fee hike will be listed on Abu Dhabi’s Education Council (Adec)'s official website, the education regulatory authority informed Emirates24|7 that the decision is still pending.
They added that the final list will be announced on Adec's portal next week, and will help parents crosscheck the percentage of increase.
“Adec is still not sharing that (web) link because there are cases still awaiting final decision after their appeal," stated an official at Adec's Private Schools and Quality Assurance Sector (PSQA).
A report in an Arabic newspaper stated that only those schools listed on the Adec website will be entitled for a fee hike.
According to the education board, only those that met their criteria and conditions were approved for fee hike.
It is reported that the board had received numerous complaints from parents of “unapproved fee hike”, with many claiming schools were increasing fees for textbooks, transport and uniforms.
Hamad Al Dhaheri, PSQA’s executive director, told Al Ittihad newspaper that requests for fee hikes from private school fees are received every January.
The conditions for determining the annual increase includes the evaluation agenda, improving facilities and infrastructure, investing in human resources and training of teaching staff.
In addition, the percentage of Emiratis among the teaching, administrative and technical staff and students is considered.
The admission of special needs students and provision of support needed for them is taken into account.
PSQA stressed that the fee increase applications must be linked to school improvement plan.
