UAE authorities approved applications by 14 nurseries to raise fees by 10-20 per cent for the next school year, but rejected applications by three others.

The Social Affairs ministry said it had received applications from 17 nurseries requesting an increase in fees for the 2015-2016 scholastic year and that three of them were opened just two years ago.

“We approved applications for fee rise by 14 nurseries and turned down requests by three others.

"These did not meet the conditions that require nurseries seeking fee increases must be in operation for at least three years,” said Mouza Al Shoumi, Director of the children’s division at the ministry.

Quoted by Dubai-based Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm', she said nurseries seeking such increases cited higher rents, pay hikes for workers and other reasons.

She said some nurseries had sought a fee hike of up to 70 per cent but added that the ministry had set a maximum 20 per cent increase for nurseries every three years.
