Labour inspectors making surprise visits to construction firms to ensure compliance with a summer law banning work during the hot noon hours caught 148 companies violating that law in the first month since it was enforced.

Officials said the companies were fined Dh15,000 each for failing to comply with the rules stipulating all outdoor workers take a break between 12.30 and 3.00 pm for three months starting from June 15 every summer.

The Ministry of Labour enforces these rules during summer to avert on-site accidents because of recurrent heat strike cases as a result of soaring temperatures.

The Ministry had warned companies against violating such regulations, saying they would be fined Dh15,000 and could be shut temporarily in case they repeat the offence.

According to assistant undersecretary for labour inspection, Maher Al Obad, ministry teams have visited nearly 25,000 construction firms since the law was enforced. He said more than 99 per cent of them were found to be abiding by the rules.
