Fifteen people were drowned off the beaches of Sharjah last year, compared to seven in 2011. Four people have lost their lives at sea in the first quarter of this year, according to the emirate’s police.

The drowning incidents took place mostly in Al Khan and Al Mamzar areas.

The latest drowning was on Tuesday in which a 37-year-old Emirati died. His body was washed ashore near Sharjah Corniche.

A Sharjah police statement said many people do not pay attention to warnings about places where swimming is forbidden, causing many incidents of drowning.

Colonel Omar Abdullah Al Suwaidi, director of Sharjah police stations, warned of a possible increase in incidents of drowning during the current summer. He urged families not to allow children to take to the sea on their own.

Al Suwaidi also called on beachgoers to comply with instructions written on signboards on the beaches and listen to radio reports on conditions at sea.

Rescue teams and ambulances on the beaches cannot prevent drowning accidents unless beachgoers comply with instructions, especially during high tide, he added.
