Road accidents killed 151 people in the first 10 months of 2014, an average of one death every two days, according to police statistics.

The deaths were a result of 1,210 traffic accidents which were caused by massive violations of the traffic rules in the emirate of more than two million people.

The figures showed the number of casualties this year were higher than the 147 deaths recorded in the same period of 2013.

“The increase is natural as it was a result of a rise in the number of vehicles and growth in the emirate’s population,” said Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, assistant police commander for operations.

His figures showed drivers committed 2.25 million offences during the first 10 months of 2014, an average 7,500 violations a day. More than 1.3 million of the offences were detected by police cameras at junctions and key roads in the emirate.
