157kg 'unsafe' meat destroyed in Abu Dhabi

During a series of inspections in Abu Dhabi, the food control body had to destroy 157kg of chicken after they were found unfit for consumption.

Carried out by Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), the surprise checks monitored how fresh meat was stored in various Abu Dhabi outlets. Officials looked into capacity of storage machinery, transportation vehicles, product quality and fulfilment of food safety requirements in addition to requirements for tracking and recall system.

Four vehicles, used to transport fresh chicken, were given violation tickets for not maintaining adequate temperature levels and 157kg chicken were destroyed as they were unfit.

Two warning tickets were served for fresh meat refrigerators for not separating returned and spoiled meat and for not updating temperature register properly. Additionally, 61kg of meat products were confiscated to be destroyed.

According to Ali Yousef Al Saad, acting director communication and community service division at ADFCA, regular inspections is mandatory for food safety.

Apart from routine inspections, ADFCA also carries out surprise checks to contain any possible breeching of regulations.
