A government school bus rammed into a truck on a road in Ras Al Khaimah to avoid sudden swerve by a car, injuring 18 school girls and three drivers.

The accident occurred on Salihiya Road when a car driven by an Arab shot into the road from the hard shoulder, forcing the school bus driver to swerve off the lane to avert hitting that vehicle, newspapers reported.

As a result, the bus crashed into a truck on the same lane, resulting in the injury of 18 school girls on board and the drivers of the three vehicles.

Police said the girls, all Emiratis, suffered from medium to serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

The driver of the truck suffered from serious injuries while the other two drivers were slightly hurt in the accident.

“The driver of the car which caused the accident is under arrest,” Brigadier Ghanim Ahmed Ghanim, chief of the central police operations told Emarat Al Youm daily.

A picture published by the newspaper showed the bus hit the truck from the driver’s side, causing severe damage to both vehicles.
