In the first quarter of  this year, 185 new radars were installed on internal and external roads in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police said increasing the number of radars, surveillance systems and cameras across intersections in Abu Dhabi was part of a comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety.

Colonel Khalifa Al Khaili, Director, Traffic and Road Safety Engineering Department, said all old and new radars as well as red light cameras are highly effective in recording speed violations and red light jumping. He urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules.

Col Al Khaili said this measure is part of a comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety, which is based on six pillars known as the 6Es - engineering, education, enforcement, emergency, evaluation and engagement.

The plan is in accordance with the view to achieving the Abu Dhabi Police Vision of zero fatalities due to traffic accidents by 2030, he added.

Radars not only help maintain safety on roads but also compel drivers to abide by traffic rules, Col Al Khaili said.

He reminded drivers against the dangers of speeding. In fact, speeding resulted in 15 per cent of the total number of road accidents last year, while it accounted for 79 per cent of the total number of violations during the period, he added.
