A 19-year-old American girl was killed when her car crashed into a pavement in Abu Dhabi and caught fire on Saturday, police said.

The unidentified girl was driving near the newly-developed Reem Island when she lost control of her vehicle and rammed into the pavement.

“The car caught fire, leading to the death of the girl…the accident was likely a result of the sudden deviation of the car,” said Captain Abdullah Al Tamimi, customers service director at the Civil Defence, quoted by the semi official daily Alittihad.

Reem had been a desolate island before it was developed to receive more than 100,000 inhabitants this year. The tiny island is located 200 metres off the Tourist Cub area but it has been linked to mainland by a massive causeway.
