Road accidents killed 463 people in the UAE in the first eight months of 2014 - almost 2 a day.

Most of them were caused by speeding, sudden change of lanes, reckless driving and jumping the red lights, according to police data.

The death toll was slightly lower than the January-August period of 2013, when 464 people were killed, the figures showed.

But total accidents declined by nearly 10.7 per cent to 3,170 from 3,549 in the same period, showed the figures published in the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm.

Injuries also dropped by 7.5 per cent to 4,602 from 4,969 and the decline was mainly a result of intensified measures taken by the police to curb accidents, including increased patrols, deployment of more speed cameras and awareness campaigns, the paper said, quoting Brigadier Gaith Al Zaabi, traffic coordination director at the interior ministry.

His figures showed sudden change of lanes caused 589 accidents in the first eight months of 2014 while 265 mishaps were a result of negligence by drivers. Speeding caused 358 accidents and jumping the red lights resulted in 187 crashes.
