More than 21,000 cars jumped the red light in Abu Dhabi in the first nine months of 2015 although the drivers are aware of the advanced cameras installed at most junctions in the capital, a police officer has said.

Many of the drivers committed the offence as they rushed to avert stopping at the red signal as it switches from green, said Lt Colonel Badr Ahmed Al Harthi, director of the traffic engineering and road safety section at the Abu Dhabi traffic police.

“There were 21,851 such offences in the first nine months.

“I call on the drivers again and again to slow down as they come near junctions to avert accidents,” he said, quoted by the Arabic language daily ‘Emarat Al Youm’

He said new cameras installed at junctions can hunt drivers who jump the red light, exceed the speed limit, make sudden change of lane near the signal, and stop inside the yellow box or pedestrian crossing markings.
