4 lazy reasons for not switching jobs

There is always a long list of reasons that employees may give their employers while switching jobs – and in today’s market, some people may change jobs as well as careers several times in a decade.

On the other hand, there are those who try to convince themselves with some rather lazy reasons that keep them from looking out or even making a start to do justice to their career.

They may call these reasons ‘ground reality’ or ‘hard hitting facts’, but experts mostly brand them ‘complacency’. The sad truth is that employees who hide behind these frivolous reasons will not only affect their career growth in the long run but also affect their personal life and wellbeing.

Here, we list four common reasons that employees give themselves for not making a switch even if they aren’t in the most ideal of jobs.

#1 Where are the jobs?

This is the number one ‘lazy’ reason that most employees keep repeating to themselves despite being unhappy in their current job. Because they are reluctant to make a move, they find comfort in the so-called ‘lack of jobs’ in the market and use it as their big excuse.

They try to convince themselves and pretend to believe that lack of opportunities is the primary reason that is making them put up with their unhappy jobs. The truth, however, is that if you are a professional and a talented one, there will always be jobs for you and companies are always on the look-out for right candidates.

#2 I’m here for just some more time

This is another reason that employees may give themselves. It could be one year or six months and after that the employee says he is determined to opt for a change.

The reality is that such employees who leave things for an appropriate time may be stuck in their current job for five or 10 or more years. As the old saying goes, tomorrow never comes.

#3 It’s too late to make a switch

Then there are employees, especially the ones past their 35 or 40 mark, who are reluctant to accept change. They hide behind their age and believe that it’s too late to start things or do something afresh.

The truth is that it’s never late to make a new beginning. What’s wrong is that you’ve been stuck in a job in which you are unhappy. It doesn’t matter if you have to make a career change. Your work should be challenging and you should be passionate about it and if that means making a switch at the age of 40 or even later, it’ll be worth it.

#4 I am qualified only for this job

Again, this is a lame excuse for not looking out. Most employees believe that their qualification and experience is only suited for the kind of job they are in.

This may be true for very niche jobs, but a majority of careers are not limited in their scope. All you have to do is get a bit of training for something new you are about to embark on and keep yourself abreast of the changes happening in the market.

Just changing a job is far easier than going for a career change. For most, it can be scary as well but getting stuck in a job or career that you don’t enjoy can only be claustrophobic and stifling.

It’s better to pull up your socks and stop hiding behind these frivolous reasons. Take a stand, get ready to face the truth and find a career that you find fulfilling. You’ll be much more productive than when you’re in an unhappy job, which means that both you and your employer will be happier.
