493 held for drugs offences so far this year

Intensifying its drive against drug trafficking and abuse, the anti-narcotics department of Dubai Police confiscated 342 various hauls of drugs and arrested 493 people in the first five months of 2011.

The total volume of the drug seized during this period is around 225kgs, which includes heroin, hashish, opium, marijuana, crack, cocaine, and shabo.

Among the 493 arrested 206 have been charged with drug abuse, 24 people face accusation of trading in drugs, 51 face charges of promoting the contrabands, 140 charged with possession of banned substances, 70 accused of aiding in transport of drugs, one face charges of importing and another was allegedly cultivating a banned substance.

Major General Abdul Jalil Al Asmawi, Director General of the Anti-narcotic Department of Dubai Police, who has occupied a prominent place on the level of international cooperation in the fight against drugs, said that the department organised more than 200 drug-awareness events in the last five months.
