Last month the Al Ain Traffic and Patrols Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate General of Abu Dhabi Police returned 585 impounded vehicles to their owners as they fines had been paid and the impoundment period was over.

Major Salah Abdullah El Humairi, Acting Chief, Al Ain Traffic and Patrols Section, said the vehicles had been impounded for several reasons.

A vehicle is impounded for two months, according to the Federal Traffic Law, when the motorist is caught driving under the influence of alcohol, or the vehicle is on the roads without registration plates, or if caught overtaking other vehicles dangerously, he explained.

Similarly, vehicles are impounded for a period of one month if the driver is caught exceeding speed limit of 60 km per hour, or for reckless driving putting others life at risk, Al Humairi said and added that excessively painting vehicles can also call for one-month impoundment.

Meanwhile, those caught jumping red signals will have their vehicles impounded for 15 days and those caught with overloaded vehicles and expired registrations or worn-out tyres will have to give their vehicles for a week, the official said.

Al Humairi said, vehicles are impounded so as to teach motorists a lesson on safe driving.
