Before the road is shared with Dubai Tram on November 11, Emirates 24|7 is looking at the most important rules, signs and fines.

Here we look at traffic signs.

For all commuters, the introduction of Dubai Tram means a re-evaluation of road and traffic, as Dubai Tram will cross regular traffic at 30 junctions, crossings and intersections starting from Dubai Police Academy in Al Sufouh to Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Additional road signs are put up, road markings painted on the roads, barriers placed, new traffic signs erected and traffic fines have been approved. In driving schools, the new traffic rules have been incorporated in the driving manual, as well as theory test.

The tram box junction

At some signalised and also at some unsignalised junctions, a box junction will be found marked on the road. There are red and yellow box junctions.

A continuous red surface area including tram lines alignment across the road way indicates the Tram Box Junction. The Tram Box junction will usually come with a Box Junction, or yellow box.

The coloured surface boxes may not be entered unless exit from it is clear.

Drivers whose vehicles enter the box marking when other stationary vehicles are preventing them from leaving it are committing an offense.

Tram crossing ahead

A grey signboard depicting a white cross indicates that the lane which the driver is travelling on is about to cross a tram line, or that after turning from the lane a tram line will be crossed. The driver should exercise a high degree of care and caution.

The zigzag zone line

In the vicinity of a tram way pedestrian crossing, a zigzag zone can be found. This zone is indicated by a  white zigzag line between the lanes, and a yellow zigzag line on the both sides of the road.

In these zones, drivers may not stop their vehicles adjacent to the line marking, unless this is to give right of way to pedestrians and/or cyclists at a pedestrian and/or cyclist crossing, or to stop behind other vehicles doing the same.

Further, changing lanes within such zone is not permitted, and pedestrians and cyclist may not cross the road other than at the dedicated pedestrian and/or cyclist crossing.

Pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing in the vicinity, unlike the regular pedestrian crossing is indicated by black and yellow stripes, and looks like this:

When approaching such crossing, pedestrians should be aware of the direction the tram could come from, and only cross when not obstructing the tram movement in doing so.

Tram crossing direction

The tram could approach from the left, from the right or from both sides, depending on the location. In some cases, a single track crosses the road while double track crossing may occur elsewhere.

Several signs inform road users which is the case.

A single red cross indicates the crossing of a single track, while a red cross with a double lower line and a number at the bottom indicates a crossing of more than one track. The number indicates how many lines are crossing the road.

The direction of the tram line can be indicated by a sign depicting either one, or two trams, and an arrow indicating the direction of the tram.
