6-yr old Emirati run over while crossing road

A six-year-old Emirati boy died after he was run over by a car in Dibba, Fujairah, on Friday evening.

Mohammed Hamdan was crossing the road along with his father when a car driven by a Bangladeshi, that was heading towards Dibba, hit them. 

The child was immediately rushed to Khorfakan Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Lt Col Abdullah Khezemi, Acting Director, Investigation and Violation Department, Dibba Traffic Department, said the the fatal mishap took place at about 10.15pm when the father and the child was heading to see a football match.

Drivers violating traffic laws killed 501 people on Abu Dhabi roads in five years and police said jumping the red signal and negligence were the main offences.

The largest number of casualties was recorded in 2009, when 118 people were knocked over. In 2011, the number dropped by 31 per cent to 81.

Figures by the Abu Dhabi traffic police showed 33 people were killed on roads in the first half of 2012.

“The main reasons for the accidents were jumping the red lights and negligence, including failure by drivers to give priority to pedestrians,” said the report, published in the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum.
