Sharjah Police have started investigating a series of car break-in cases reported from the residential area around National Paints. The thieves took away even small coins kept in the cars.

Residents of the area were shocked on Monday morning after finding 60 vehicles broken into in just one night - Sunday night.

The vehicles were parked along Emirates Road, in an open free parking area. They were found with their window glass broken open with the help of glass cutters. Criminal Investigation Department officials have taken the finger prints and other evidence from the site.

Victims of vandalism in recent times have lost valuables and documents kept in their locked vehicles. Most of the victims are living in various apartments in the Al Muwaili area near National Paints and other residential area close to the University City and Al Maha Military Camp. The victims were called to the Al Gurg Police Station for information.

“Between  50 to 60 cars parked in various parts of the Al Muwaili area have been found vandalised, with their rear glass window broken and valuables stolen. We are shockedt,” said one of the victims.

Vehicle documents like 'mulkiya' [registration] and insurance papers were not stolen, residents said. They did not target the car audio systems either.

The car thefts happened a few days after about 35 vehicles were broke into last Tuesday near the Civil Defence Roundabout area, some half-a-kilometre away.

Sharjah Pollice have been searching for the culprits.

A few weeks earlier, some 14 shops in the National Paint area of Sharjah were found robbed in one night, leaving residents and businesses in the area fearful about their safety.

“Most of these cars were parked near the Abdul Rahman Supermarket in Al Muwaili area of Sharjah industrial area, close to Emirates Road. All the cars had their rear window glasses removed with the help of glass cutters. After removing the small glass window, the robbers unlocked the cars and absconded with money, ATM cards, mobile phones and other valuables kept in their cars.

“From my car, Dh3,000 is missing. There was another car in which a new printing machine was kept,” said one of the victims.

Documents kept in the vehicles were left scattered around. The vehicles were parked in an open area without much lighting. Even some of the vehicles parked near residential buildings were broke into.

Even though the cars are insured against theft, insurance companies may give each Dh250 only to compensate for the rear glass windows removed by the thieves. “We have to pay Dh100 to the Sharjah Police to take a police report. Insurance companies may give maximum Dh250 for replacing the glasses. It also involves a lot of paper work. So we decided to spend Dh250 from our pocket to repair the broken glasses,” said a victim.
