Dubai’s traffic police confiscated licences of 662 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol in the first eight months of 2012.

The licences of 40 other drivers were impounded for causing fatal accidents on the emirate’s roads while 19 people had their licences confiscated for driving under the influence of drugs.

“A total 836 licences were confiscated in Dubai in the first eight months of this year for periods ranging from three months to one year…they were all involved in dangerous driving,” said Salah Al Falasi, chief traffic prosecutor in Dubai.

He told 'Emarat Al Youm' daily that drivers whose licences are seized could be jailed for three months and fined Dh5,000 in case they were found driving.
