Dubai’s human rights authorities received 698 reports from the public against the emirate’s police in the first nine months of 2014 but most of them turned out to be false.

A large number of the reports were against traffic police and involved complaints by drivers who received traffic tickets.

“We received 698 reports against Dubai’s police in the first nine months of this year and most of them were against the traffic police for issuing fines,” said Brigadier Mohammed Al Murr, director of the Human Rights administration at Dubai Police.

“We already have a committee to study these reports and we found that 691 of them were false…only 7 reports were true and we dealt with them.”

Quoted by Dubai-based ‘Emarat Al Youm’ Arabic language daily, Murr said the committee normally responds to the complainants within a week, adding that the number of reports received is ‘minimal’ compared to the millions of cases handled by the police.

He said many reports filed by the public against the police are studied by the Dubai Police Commander Major-General Matar Al Mazina.

“He personally follows up these reports because he believes that they are very important elements in upgrading performance and identifying gaps.”

He said cops found to have committed a criminal offence are referred to court while those found to have committed minor offences are punished within the police department and forced to undergo training.
