Abu Dhabi law-enforcers fined 816 people for throwing cigarette butts on the road through 2014 within a drive to ensure compliance with public health.

Most of those fined were caught red-handed dumping their cigarette butts on the ground in public places despite repeated warnings by the Abu Dhabi municipality.

Municipality officials said inspectors caught the offenders during routine patrols in public places and to shops and other outlets to ensure abidance by the emirate’s rules.

Hundreds of inspectors are deployed daily through the emirate for this purpose and such drives have also resulted in issuing 1,981 tickets against cars found parking on pavements and 84 vehicles parking near public dust bins.

The Arabic language daily ‘Al Khaleej’ said inspectors also gave more than 13,000 notices to shops and other outlets this year for violating public health and safety rules.
