A-level exam results: Some UAE schools surpass UK average

The average score of some schools in the UAE have beaten the UK’s average of the A-level results.

Following the British curriculum, the average score of Dubai British School (DBS), a Taleem school, outshines the average result of students in the UK this year. “We have exceeded this year’s UK average on all levels,” a spokesperson for the school told Emirates 24|7.

Now, these proud and happy students are busy preparing their onward journey to universities across the world, with prestigious ones like Oxford and Cambridge in the list.

Students at Gems International Schools in the UAE have also performed very well in the 2013 A-level examinations. A good number (31 per cent of students) have received A*-A, which is higher than the UK National Average of 26.3 per cent this year and 99 per cent of students achieved A* - E across the Gems Schools offering the National Curriculum for England.

Jumeirah College has obtained the school’s best ever results, with 44 per cent of students receiving A*-A and 78 per cent receiving A*- B.

The Cambridge High School, Abu Dhabi has also obtained great results this year. Thirty one per cent of students received A*-A, while 57 per cent received A* - B.

And, of course, parents are a happy lot. “I am very proud of my son. He’s done his best and we are now busy preparing for the university. It’s an exacting time for the entire family,” said the father of a student with an A* - B grade.

The General Certificate of Education Advanced Level generally termed the GCE Advanced Level or more commonly the A-level, is an academic qualification offered by educational institutions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to students completing secondary or pre-university education.

The qualification is also offered in Scotland as an alternative school-leaving qualification, and, with varying content and style, throughout the Commonwealth and on most Caribbean islands.

A-levels require studying an offered A-level subject over a two-year period and sitting for an examination at the end of each year (AS and A2, respectively), proctored by an official assessment body. Most students study three or four A-level subjects simultaneously during Year 12 and Year 13 (ages 16–18), either in a Secondary Education institution or in a Sixth Form College, as part of their further education.
