A tonne of drugs seized in Dubai this year

Dubai Police seized 1019 kilogrammes of narcotic substances during the first 11 months of this year and arrested 962 people on charges ranging from peddling to consumimg drugs.

Among those arrested, and now facing charges, are 142 drug peddlers and 67 dealers during the first 11 months of the year.

The Anti-Narcotics wing of the police seized 747 kilogrammes of hashish, 152 kilos of heroin, 18 kilos of opium, 44 kilos of cocaine and 38 kilos of crystal methamphetamine were seized.

In 680 cases registered following the hauls made this year so far, 962 people have been accused of either peddling or dealing in drugs.

The information was released on the sidelines of a press conference held to announce the arrest of a drug kingpin of Gulf nationality.

Among those arrested during this year were 67 drug dealers, 142 peddlers, 189 smugglers, 319 drug abusers, 230 who kept drugs with them and 15 accused of importing narcotics.

Major General Abdul Jalil Al Asmawi Director General of the Anti-Narcotics wing spoke about the dangers of the crystal drug that would look like snowflakes and is abused by smoking or injecting or sniffing. It causes destruction of brain cells and nerves and lead to atrophy of the brain.

He said the estimated market price of the highly dangerous drug range between Dh70,000 and Dh120,000, which is more than heroin.
