Traffic fines collected in Dubai shot up 50 per cent in the past two months, according to Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director-General of Dubai Traffic Police.

This followed announcement of a 30 per cent discount in traffic fines charged before September 10 and payment period of three months from September 11 to December 11to avail of the discount, Maj Gen Al Zafeen said.He expected 30 per cent of the fines to be collected by December 11.

Dubai Traffic Police may consider extending the discount offer period, he added. Unpaid traffic fines in Dubai total about Dh369 million, part of which is owed by GCC nationals. Dubai Traffic Police is working with authorities in the GCC states to collect these fines, he said.

However, Maj Gen Al Zafeen denied, in a statement to 'Emirates24|7', that Dubai Traffic Police intends to write-off these fines as bad debts. He said these fines will be collected “by all means.”

Meanwhile, the number of driving offences in Dubai during the first six months of this year came to 1,221,000, including 408 for driving under influence of alcohol.

About 9,000 traffic rule violations related to jumping the red signal and 12,250 offences were about non-renewal of driving licence.

The were 58,542 cases of blocking movement of traffic and 45,042 cases of not fastening the seat belt and 2,414 cases of driving in the opposite direction of the traffic.
